UWI Pelicans were crowned champions of the 2008 Peter Cargill Memorial Games at the Harbour View stadium on Saturday. The Pelicans lifted the title after a polished and impressive undefeated performance which saw them scoring an easy 3-0 win over host Harbour View masters, and a hard fought 1-0 extra-time victory over a talent- laced Peter Cargill XI that comprised a combined team of Camperdown and Waterhouse players. Coach Cargill was a past student of Camperdown High, and was the coach of Waterhouse national premier league team at his untimely death in 2005.

Ambassador AB Stewart Stephenson, the President of the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA), accompanied by Mrs. Cynthia Warren-Cooke, the Principal of Camperdown High School, Ian McNaughton, the president of the Kingston and St. Andrew Masters Football League Association (KSAMLA), and also by Peter Hibbert, the President of Waterhouse FC, got the 2008 Cargill Games underway by greeting the teams before the opening game between Harbour View masters and the Peter Cargill XI.

The championship game between the Peter Cargill XI and the UWI Pelicans produced a very entertaining encounter as both teams displayed a lot of skill and efficient tactical play. The Cargill XI, led by Hugh “Bingy” Blair, Baris Johnson, Dominique Spaulding, and Wayne Whonder, combined well in attack only to be repelled by the stubborn Pelicans defense marshaled by Andrew Hines, Mark Robinson, and Dean Smith.

After a goal-less forty minutes fulltime, the UWI Pelicans found the game winner in extra-time from the boots of Lawrence Mascoe to snatch a well deserved 1-0 win and the 2008 Cargill Games championship crown. The 2008 Peter Cargill Games were presented by Harbour View football club, and were sponsored by Pepsi Cola Jamaica Limited. The game officials were Peter Prendergast, Margaret Sutherland, Kevin Thomas, and Malachi Brown.
