As if in the right mood to celebrate the Clubs upcoming 36th Anniversary, on Thursday March 4th, the “Stars of the East” sparkled in an extra-ordinary display of top class football climaxed by two stunning goals to overpower former Champions Portmore United, in front of a jubilant home crowd.
Right from the start of play, the more creative HVFC went forward with clear intent. Portmore resisted, matched us toe-to-toe and threw something back for us to think about as Ricardo Cousin’s cannon-like blast from 28 yards, had goal written all over it until the faithful hand of goalkeeper, Dwayne Miller palmed it away and in the process onto the crossbar then out for a corner.
Throughout the patience and team coordination of the HVFC midfield quartet lead by Edwards’s (Richard and John-Ross) of no relation, creator Jermaine Hue and possessor, Romario Campbell. They had a field day working the ball in and out of tight defensive networks, that had Portmore United players fouling constantly to stop the play as breaking up the sequences of passes were futile on the day.
Kavin Bryan was being closely watched by Andre Darby and the returning international, Anthony Modeste but neither could restrain him from powering forward to goal. His strike partner the experienced Jomo Gordon, kept running off the ball into vacant spaces thus created alternatives to maintain the teams attacking presence around the penalty area.
Hungry for free-flowing attacking football the tense patrons gobbled up the Sunday afternoon feast of fine football from both teams but still anxious to see the games first goal, from either team? 0-0 at half 0-0 at halftime, as the referees enter the field of play, to resume play in the second half. Filled with giveaways from Club sponsors, Purity Bakery giving small Buns and Cakes as Grace Kennedy’s newly marketed “Chillin’ ” Soft drink was liberally distributed in the stands.
1-0
Gift Gifts out of the way, HVFC settled down to real business when in the 51st minute, Captain Jermaine Hue launched a scud-like missile from 32 yards out that dipped, bounced and embarrassed Portmore United’s custodian, and National Goalkeeper, Dwayne Kerr to “Cough if up” as he could not cope with all the aspects of the kick and as he spilt it, into the path of the unrushing Kavin Bryan who lurked around the penalty spot to blast past him and score.
2-0
Substitute, Andre Fagan entered the frey when his teammates “Tails were up” and added another, in minute 80 when Darby shielded a ball awaiting his goalkeeper, only to see the alert Fagan, toeing it away
