The third place playoff game has long been one of those fixtures that can quite frankly be an exciting open encounter full of entertainment, action, or just a grand waste of time. For Portmore United supporters it was the former but for us, sadly it was the latter.
All the substitutes who had not played or played fewer games were chosen to participate. Four regular players sat out the game with injuries, fatigue, or just rested. We looked interested for all of 8 minutes to score the first goal after 4 minutes by Demarco Thorne, who deserved it. Then four minutes later, Iyala Harris, family of former HVFC striker and Coach Trevor “Jumpy” Harris, equalized from a corner kick at the near post to make it 1-1.
We never showed much interest thereafter. Harris eventually scored a hat trick to win to push his team to win, 3-1, as we finished fourth as we did three years ago. Congratulations to Portmore United on finishing third, while the Cuba National Team and DC United will play in the finals. We return home Sunday at 6:55pm via sponsors Cayman Airways.
We thank everyone who supported us, and the tournament organizers and participants who created an exciting affair, with 5 quality competitive games throughout each day. We are on our way home.
