An improved performance from Harbour View FC against a visiting Waterhouse FC at the Compound on Sunday was an encouraging effort that pleased Head Coach Ricardo Gardner somewhat, though the 0-0 draw left him unfulfilled.
“We would have been feeling much better with all three points today. Playing at home, another clean sheet, but when we play at home and draw we should be winning these games. Granted we played well, I did not think we did enough in the offensive third to gain for us that desired result of a win and this, to my mind, was from a lack of creating sufficient positive opportunities to score goals,” Gardner, the former Reggae Boy and Bolton Wanderers midfielder/defender, said.
“Currently this is an area to which we have been paying much attention. We can see signs coming through and I think all that we need to do at this point is to continue to persevere more vigorously, as this is one of the hardest areas of the craft to mastermind. I am seeing positive signs of willpower to put into practice most of what we, the coaching staff, is trying to get across to the players. We think, though, they need to be a bit more patient in front of goal to maximise the will with better efforts. This done, we are looking forward for some good things in the future,” Gardner added.
The result brought a similar reaction from Waterhouse FC’s Head Coach Glendon “Admiral” Bailey.
“Coming off a loss last week we really wanted to move to the win column. From the season started this is our fifth game and we have not found ourselves in the win column as yet. We have so far drawn four games, and lost one. We have some more work to do where our attacking game is concerned. But first, we have to fix the leak at the back after conceding so many goals this early in the season. So stopping the leak tonight is a positive sign for us while preventing more goals from scoring against us,” Bailey explained.
While both coaches thought they should have scored, defence was for the most part the master of offence as both goalkeepers — Richard McCallum of Waterhouse FC and Joel Johnson of Harbour View FC — were called upon to avert the lurking danger from their teams falling behind with timely interceptions.
