Former Rusea’s High School star Brian Brown continued to terrorise Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) defences on Sunday as he scored two more opportunistic goals to increase his tally to nine and in the process pushed defending champions Harbour View to their eighth win of the season.
Harbour View defeated Boys’ Town 2-1 to increase their lead at the top of the table to 26 points, four more than Montego Bay United who played to a 0-0 draw with Waterhouse on Sunday. Boys’ Town, on the other hand, remained in ninth position on 13 points.
The hungry forward, who was sent from his native Montego Bay mid-season last year to Harbour View, has been on a one-man campaign to finish as top scorer in the league and become a fixture in the national programme. His goals came in the 49th and 67th minutes. Michael Campbell scored for Boys’ Town in the 78th minute.
“These are two more goals that I have scored, and it is my job to score. When I score, it gives the team a chance to win, and that is my purpose in the team,” a very pleased Brown told The Gleaner on Sunday night.
“Most definitely I would say that my plan is to finish the season as top scorer and to help my team to win the title again,” added the predominantly left-footed player.
More confident player
In comparing the way he played last year when he was more timid, to this year where he has become a much more confident and assertive player, Brown said the major difference is experience.
“What has changed this season over last season is that I am more experienced now. I had a good pre-season with the team, and I am playing with more experienced players, players like Clifton Waugh and Keith Kelly, and I am learning from them, which is benefiting me, the St James native said.
Brown also spoke of his recently earned national caps which have boosted his confidence and made him more comfortable with himself.
“When you are scoring goals you get more confident and you are willing to shoot, to take shots and that is what is happening with me now. I am much more confident in myself and a big part of this is the experience I had with the national team.
“It was a great experience. It opened my eyes and has helped me to see what can happen when you work hard. I got the opportunity to play against an international striker like Kenwyne Jones, and I want to reach where he is, and for me to do that, I have to just keep on scoring and trying to get better and better every day,” the 20-year-old Brown declared. He had matched up against the English Premier League striker, from Stoke City, in Jamaica’s recent friendly internationals against Trinidad and Tobago.
