CLARENDON, Jamaica — Coach Harold Thomas pinpointed Harbour View’s failure to capitalise on their huge ball possession as the main reason for their opening day defeat to Red Stripe Premier League rivals Sporting Central Academy.

Despite dictating play for much of the game, the defending champions were upset 2-0 after falling behind against the run of play in minute 28. They then conceded a second goal on the counter, in the 75th minute, while chasing the equaliser.

Thomas, who was making his debut as Harbour View’s head coach, was gracious in defeat.

“It was a good game,” he said. “I think Sporting Central capitalised on their opportunities and they deserved to win.”

He added: “We had, by far, large volumes of possession but weren’t able to convert that into goals.”

On Sunday, the ‘Stars of the East’ were without influential midfield duo Jermaine Hue and Evan Taylor. While not stating it explicitly, Thomas hinted in his post-game interview that both players were missed.

“We have a lot of corrections to make,” he informed. “The leadership probably wasn’t there in midfield today and that is one area that we need to correct quickly.”

In spite of the loss, the former Rivoli United coach said he was pleased with aspects of his team’s performance.
