In the first game to kick off the tournament, we faced the local Mexican team Buhos de Hermosillo FC in a one-sided morning encounter. Our tournament opener started out badly as we conceded, not just one but three early goals, in the first twenty minutes.

First, there was a long-range shot over the head of our custodian in the sixth minute. Goal number two was headed in five minutes later from a left-sided corner. In minute eighteen, a defensive lapse led to a midfielder penetrating the two centre halves to slot the ball home. Some measure of organisation, communication and stability was later recovered as we settled slowly to maintain the scoreline until halftime.

The second half had barely started, when a couple of goalkeeping errors advanced the score to 5-0. Substitutions followed, and again stability returned for a while but the team’s confidence was already shattered. Two more well-taken goals were created as the Mexicans’ confidence grew, we improved in patches but far from our best, 7-0 full time.

We regrouped in discussion, analysis and resolution, working towards rapid turnaround tomorrow in our afternoon encounter against San Juan Jambloteh FC of Trinidad & Tobago.
